With the original plans of hiking in the White Mountains foiled due to weather, a few friends and I decided to take on the Blue Hills. Looking for something that has comparable technicality of the mountains, the Blue Hills fit the part with it's high class trails.
Taking on the Skyline Trail, Liam, Jason, Jack, and I covered almost 14 miles and just over 4,000 feet of elevation gain. Packing light and moving fast was our plan. Maintaining about a 19 minute pace while marching through the roots, rocks, and wet leaves, we mixed in some periodic high speed runs.
Knowing the weather conditions were to be overcast with some rain, the trail was a bit slick. We all had our share of stumbles and slips, some worst than others, but quickly laughed them all off. When the skies opened up with some heavy down pours we simply acknowledged our external locus of control and made the most of it. Sprinting through the woods with your buddies, stomping through puddles, and not being sure if it's sweat or rain that's getting in your eye was an awesome way to lighten up the gloomy Saturday.
So if you are wishing you could get up to the mountains but cannot, I highly recommend the many trails within the Blue Hills Reservation!
